September 1939: The commander of the Admiral Graf Spee, Hans Lansdorff, receives orders to sink as many cargo ships as possible in the South Atlantic. The objective is to intercept ships crossing the Atlantic and prevent supplies from reaching the United Kingdom and other destinations.During the first months of the war, the plan worked. In just a few weeks, the Admiral Graf Spee sank nine ships and sent almost 50,000 tons of cargo to the bottom of the sea. This enormous loss put the military command in London under immense pressure. The Admiralty had no choice but to focus on hunting down and capturing the Admiral Graf Spee, whose end would come in what is known as the Battle of the River Plate and its aftermath.
