We are pleased to announce the launch of THE BOOK WOMEN, a new self-produced board game designed by Eugeni Castaño and David Bernal, which pays homage to the celebrated Book Women, the librarians who, during the Great Depression, brought books, education, and hope to the most isolated communities in the Appalachian Mountains thanks to the historic Pack Horse Library Project promoted as part of the New Deal. The game is illustrated by Amelia Sales (Diables, Orloj) and graphic design is by Dossom Studio.
In The Book Women, 1 to 4 players will take on the role of one of these brave librarians, traveling the roads of Kentucky to deliver books, build community libraries, and meet the needs of the most remote families. With games lasting about 90 minutes, the game combines a carefully crafted historical setting with a strategic experience full of decisions.
Its design revolves around an original dice selection and placement mechanism, combined with resource management, engine building through a personal rondel, route planning, and objective fulfillment. As the game progresses, players will develop their librarian's skills, expand the library network, and leave their mark on one of the most inspiring cultural initiatives of the 20th century.
With The Book Women, we expand our catalog of historical games with a proposal that focuses on one of the most unique educational initiatives in American history, bringing to the table the effort, determination, and impact of those women who brought books to where they seemed impossible to reach.
The Book Women will seek funding on Gamefound starting October 1, 2026.
