Spain, 1936. General Franco and his troops advanced through the country, ushering in a long period of repression. After the end of the Spanish Civil War, a group of Republicans decided to continue the armed struggle, forming resistance groups known as the Maquis. Hidden in the mountains, these men and women risked their lives to fight for the ideals of democracy and freedom. They faced Franco's army, the Civil Guard, and the Armed Police. The Maquis had honed their guerrilla warfare skills in France during World War II and were determined to reclaim their homeland. In their minds, only the echo of the desire of many of their compatriots resounded: Resist!
Take on the role of the Maquis and confront the Franco regime. Over an indeterminate number of rounds, undertake increasingly difficult missions and earn valuable victory points. It's up to you to decide how far you want to go. Will you settle for eliminating a few key targets, or will you fight to the end to liberate Spain from oppression? Let the fight begin.
Resist! is a fast-paced, card-based solitaire game where you take on the role of a member of the Spanish Maquis, fighting against the Franco regime. Over a series of rounds, you undertake increasingly difficult missions, and completing them earns you the points needed to win. Failing to overcome the missions and enemies will result in defeat. At the end of each round, you must choose whether to end the resistance or risk everything and embark on another mission.
At the start of the game, you assemble a team of twelve Maquis, represented by a deck of cards. The core of the game lies in the tension between keeping your Maquis hidden from Franco or revealing them to unleash their full potential. Unfortunately, revealed Maquis are removed from your deck, and you likely won't be able to use them for the rest of the game. While Resist! has some minor deck-building elements, it's primarily a deck-busting game where you manage your deck, balancing the decision to defeat the immediate threat with trying to move on to the next mission.
